July 2012-BBC Meeting Summary
This month, BBC met at Temescal Beach House (thanks Elizabeth at East Bay Regional Park District!). ACPHD Director, Anita Siegel, kicked off the meeting with introductions and recognition to BBC for winning the award for best practices from NACCHO!
For this meeting’s member spotlight, UC Berkeley-UCSF student, Jessica Chow shared her work in the Joint Medical Program and why addressing health and wealth inequities is important to her, focusing on her Prosperity Project photovoice study. She spoke of how her passion for advocating for health and becoming a doctor is rooted her experience growing up in Oakland and the hardships she and her family faced when she was young.
Next, we shared the BBC survey results and recommendations from the BBC steering committee retreat and everyone weighed in on ways to improve BBC’s operational structure to best meet our goals. We wrapped up with a quick activity where everyone shared ideas and resources for the up and coming Best Babies Zone project under the four main areas: education, economic and physical environment, community and healthcare.
